Is The Sandbox Dead? SAND in 2026

The Sandbox is still running in 2026, but it is a much smaller project than the one that defined the 2021 metaverse boom. It shipped Season 7 in February 2026, still pays creators in SAND and is building its own Layer 2, yet it operates with less than half its former staff, its staking and DAO are switched off and SAND trades about 99% below its peak.

So "dead" is the wrong word, and "thriving" would be just as wrong. The Sandbox sits in the middle ground where many 2021 gaming projects ended up: alive, shipping, and still searching for a reason for people to show up between events.

How The Sandbox Got Here

The story of the last four years is one of shrinking expectations. In late 2021, The Sandbox raised $93 million in a SoftBank-led round, signed partners from Snoop Dogg to Gucci and saw its LAND sell for six and seven figures. The company was valued at about $4 billion in 2022.

Interest in virtual worlds faded quickly after that. User counts became a point of public embarrassment when on-chain data in 2022 showed only a few hundred daily active wallets, and the company's valuation was cut to around $1 billion by 2024. Then came the 2025 retrenchment: SAND staking closed on June 26, and in August Animoca Brands took direct control, installed Robby Yung as CEO, moved both co-founders out of executive roles and cut more than half of roughly 250 employees, Blockworks reported. Offices in five countries closed.

2026 added two more shocks. The DAO was reportedly paused in February, and on August 21 and 22 an attacker exploited SAND's Base and BNB Chain bridges, draining about 14.7 million SAND. The team retired the contracts and pledged 1:1 repayment, and Korean exchanges lifted their trading caution labels on October 2, which sent SAND up more than 50% in a day, as The Crypto Times reported.

What Is Still Working

The evidence that The Sandbox is alive comes from what it keeps shipping:

  • Seasons continue. Season 6 (September 2025) ran nine weeks with Cirque du Soleil and passed 100,000 hours of gameplay. Season 7 (February 2026) added browser play with no download required.
  • Creators keep building. The project reports more than 400,000 creators, and community-made experiences made up over half of Season 7.
  • SANDchain is in progress. The Ethereum Layer 2 ran a testnet from late 2025, with SAND planned as its gas token, as CoinGecko's overview of SANDchain describes.
  • The supply overhang is gone. About 98% of SAND circulates, so no more vesting cliffs are coming, a point covered in our SAND tokenomics breakdown.

What Still Looks Weak

Engagement between Seasons remains thin, and The Sandbox has never published consistent daily active user data. Holders lost their yield when the official pools closed, as our SAND staking explainer details, and governance went quiet with the DAO pause. Land prices tell the same story: entry-level parcels now trade for tens of dollars, as our guide to Sandbox LAND shows.

The project's closest peer has followed a similar arc. Our Sandbox vs Decentraland comparison shows both tokens at nearly the same market cap of roughly $185 million in October 2026, a fraction of their 2021 values. Other first-wave gaming tokens faced the same question, as our pieces asking whether Axie Infinity is dead and whether Gala Games is dead explore.

Four Signals That Will Settle the Question

If you want to judge The Sandbox's health yourself over the next year, these are the measurable signals to watch, roughly in order of importance:

  1. SANDchain mainnet. A launch in 2026 with real transaction volume would give SAND recurring demand. Another delay would weaken the main argument for the project.
  2. Season participation. The Sandbox counted more than 144,000 players across its two 2025 Seasons. Growth from that base would show that browser access is working.
  3. Security follow-through. Completing the bridge-exploit repayments and redeploying safe contracts would rebuild trust with exchanges and holders. Until then, holders should keep SAND on Ethereum or Polygon, as our best SAND wallets guide recommends.
  4. Token liquidity. SAND's trading volume and exchange support matter for a sub-$200 million asset; one derivatives delisting in August 2026 already thinned the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Sandbox still worth playing in 2026?

The Sandbox is worth playing during Seasons, when new experiences launch and SAND reward pools are active. Between Seasons there is less to do, so most players treat it as an event-driven game.

Did The Sandbox shut down?

No. The Sandbox has not shut down; it continues to run Seasons, creator programs and SANDchain development under Animoca Brands. It did shut several regional offices and lay off more than half its staff in 2025.

Is SAND a dead coin?

SAND remains actively traded, with a market cap near $187 million and daily volume in the tens of millions of dollars as of October 2026. It has lost about 99% from its peak, which makes it a high-risk asset, but it is not abandoned.

Alive, Smaller and Running Out of Time

The Sandbox survived the collapse that ended many metaverse projects, but survival came with a smaller team, fewer holder benefits and a single big bet on SANDchain. The next twelve months will decide whether it rebuilds around that chain or keeps shrinking. For the range of outcomes on the token, see our SAND price prediction.
