Reserve Protocol History: From Stablecoins to DTFs

Reserve began in 2017 as a plan for a stable, asset-backed currency for people living with hyperinflation, became known for a dollar-savings app in Venezuela, launched its open protocol on Ethereum in 2022, and by 2026 had turned into a platform for onchain index products called DTFs. Through every stage, Reserve Rights (RSR) has been the token meant to capture value from whatever the protocol issues.

The story explains a lot about RSR today: why its supply is so large, why its price peaked in 2021, and why the project now talks more about stock baskets than stablecoins.

The Founding Idea, 2017 to 2019

Nevin Freeman and Matt Elder started Reserve with an ambitious goal: a global currency backed by a diversified pool of assets, run without a central issuer, for people whose national money was losing value. The original design paired two tokens. A stable token would hold its value, and RSR would absorb risk and capture growth.

The idea attracted heavyweight backing. A 2018 seed round included Peter Thiel and several crypto venture funds, and RSR started trading publicly in 2019 with a 100 billion maximum supply, a number set for a currency meant to serve millions of people. The same year, Reserve released RSV, a stablecoin backed by a basket of dollar stablecoins such as USDC, an early version of the "basket token" idea. The differences between the two biggest dollar stablecoins it drew on are covered in our USDC vs USDT comparison.

The Venezuela Years, 2019 to 2021

The team's most visible product was not a protocol at all. The Reserve app let people in Venezuela convert bolivars into a dollar stablecoin and spend or send it, a move The Block reported as Reserve entered the country. The app later reached users in other high-inflation economies, including Angola.

Adoption was real. In late March 2021, Reserve said its app had become the most downloaded finance app in Venezuela, past 100,000 total downloads, according to Crowdfund Insider. That growth coincided with the 2021 bull market, and RSR hit its all-time high of about $0.12 on April 16, 2021. The app showed demand for dollar savings, but it did not by itself create a mechanism that sent value to RSR holders, which became a recurring criticism.

The Protocol Launch, 2022 to 2024

In 2022, Reserve shipped the system RSR had been designed for. The Reserve Protocol went live on Ethereum, and RSR moved to an upgraded token contract as part of the launch. Anyone could now create an RToken: an asset-backed token with a chosen basket of collateral, its own governance, and a pool of staked RSR protecting holders if any collateral failed.

Several RTokens gained traction. eUSD and hyUSD offered dollar exposure backed by yield-earning collateral, and ETH+ became a diversified basket of liquid staking tokens. Deployments spread to Base and Arbitrum. RSR stakers earned a share of each basket's revenue for providing that protection, a model that still works the same way and is explained step by step in our guide on how to stake RSR.

Growth was steady but small next to the large stablecoin issuers. Most of the market's dollar demand went to centralized stablecoins, and RTokens stayed a niche for DeFi users.

The Pivot to DTFs, 2025 to 2026

Reserve's answer was to widen what the protocol issues. In 2025 it rebranded RTokens as Yield DTFs and introduced the Reserve Index Protocol, which lets anyone launch an Index DTF: a fully backed basket of crypto tokens with onchain governance and rebalancing. The CMC20 index with CoinMarketCap followed on BNB Chain.

The pivot also changed RSR's economics. From May 2025, part of every Index DTF's fees has been used to buy and burn RSR, giving holders a direct link to protocol revenue for the first time. In July 2026, Reserve launched tokenized stock baskets, from a Magnificent 7 fund to AI infrastructure themes, and in September 2026 holders cast the first Burn Gauge vote, choosing zero treasury unlocks and amplified burns. The product lineup today is mapped out in our guide to Reserve DTFs, and the supply effects of the burn program are set out in the RSR tokenomics breakdown.

What the History Means for RSR Holders

Three threads run through Reserve's nine years:

  • Ambition first, revenue later. The 100 billion supply was sized for a world currency. Only since 2025 has the protocol earned fees that reach RSR, so the token spent years priced on promise. How analysts value it now that fees exist is covered in our RSR price prediction.
  • The basket idea never left. RSV, RTokens and Index DTFs are all versions of one concept: a single token backed by many assets. The 2026 products are the most mainstream form of it so far.
  • Governance is now the lever. Treasury votes and burn settings, decided by holders, will shape RSR's supply more than any schedule set at launch.

Holders who want custody of their RSR through that next stage should match their wallet to their plans, which our guide to the best RSR wallets covers in detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

When was Reserve Rights launched?

Reserve Rights (RSR) began public trading in 2019. The Reserve Protocol that gives RSR its staking and governance roles went live on Ethereum in 2022.

What happened to the Reserve app?

The Reserve app was a consumer product for saving and spending dollar stablecoins in high-inflation countries such as Venezuela. The project's focus has since moved to the onchain protocol and its DTF products.

Why did RSR fall so far from its 2021 high?

RSR fell from its April 2021 high of about $0.12 because the wider crypto market crashed in 2022, RTokens grew slowly, and the token had no direct revenue link until fee-funded burns began in 2025. A large non-circulating supply also weighed on price.

A Long Road to a Clear Use Case

Reserve's path from a Venezuelan savings app to tokenized stock baskets looks winding, but each step kept the same goal of making diversified, asset-backed money and investments available to anyone with a wallet. For RSR, the 2025 to 2026 era is the first time that goal translates into fees and burns. Whether that is enough to move the token is the question explored in our article asking is RSR a good investment.
