Is Bitcoin's Bear Market Over? What Reddit Thinks
On October 2, a user on r/Bitcoin announced that the bear market was "officially over" and the four-year cycle "officially dead." The top reply, with 362 upvotes, wanted to know why nobody had forwarded the memo from the CEO.
Twelve days later, Bitcoin trades about 1% below where it stood when the post went up, the least satisfying outcome for everyone involved. Set the jokes aside, though, and the thread gives a more bullish verdict than the roast suggests, and the doubters are the reason why.
How r/Bitcoin Answered the "Officially Over" Post
As with our look at how much bitcoin is life-changing, we read every top-level reply, all 130 of them, and sorted each by the answer it gave. Nearly half, 59 replies, were jokes at the word "officially" with no view on the market at all, and the five most upvoted replies all belong to that group. The other 71 split like this:
| What the reply said | Replies |
|---|---|
| Not over: a crash, a new low or a longer bear market ahead | 15 |
| Not over: one more pullback first | 11 |
| Too early to call, show me proof | 9 |
| The low is in, or bullish from here | 11 |
| Nobody can know, keep buying regardless | 8 |
| Something else, mostly arguments about the four-year cycle itself | 17 |
Counted that way, the bulls lose the vote 35 to 11. The first serious reply, from someone who said they had seen the same post in three halvings, set the bar for agreeing: bitcoin has to hold above its 200-week average "without a -30% candle within six months." Most of the eight replies that refused to forecast at all pointed to dollar-cost averaging instead.
The Doubters Are Mostly Calling for a Higher Low
The reply under that test, with 17 upvotes, is the most useful sentence in the thread. A 30% correction from the post's price, it pointed out, would still be a higher low, which would mean the bottom was already in.
The numbers back it up, barely. On CoinGecko's daily prices, the lowest point of this cycle was $58,566 on July 1, 2026. On the day of the post bitcoin traded at $84,842, so a 30% drop would have landed at $59,389, about $800 above that low. At the October 14 price of $83,729, the same drop lands at $58,610. The two tests in that exchange, no 30% candle and a higher low, now meet within $50 of each other.

Then look at the prices the pullback camp named. Six of its 11 replies gave one: the $60,000s, $60,000 (twice), the $70,000s, a long entry at $82,670, and one vaguer guess that it might dip below $60,000. Five of the six sit above the July low, so most of the people telling the poster to calm down are forecasting a dip that leaves the bottom intact. On a chart, that is what the end of a bear market looks like.
Only 15 replies argued for a crash, a new low or a longer slide, and two of those still named $40,000, a level the sub has been waiting on for a year.
Read closely, most of r/Bitcoin's doubters are cautious bulls.
Where the Cycle Calendar Missed
The mockery has a backstory. For a year, part of the sub followed a four-year cycle calendar that spaced past tops and bottoms 364 days apart. Counting from the October 6, 2025 peak, that put the bottom around October 6, 2026, and the version the sub argued about most put it near $40,000. In a September thread poking fun at that target, a reply with 76 upvotes argued the cycle still works and simply produces shallower bear markets each time. Here is how the calendar compares with the record:
- Peak: $126,080 on October 6, 2025
- Calendar bottom: around October 6, 2026, near $40,000 in the version argued over most
- Actual low: $58,566 on July 1, 2026, 268 days after the peak and 53.5% below it
- October 6, 2026: $85,771 on the day the calendar circled
The rhythm held up better than the calendar did. Bitcoin still put in a peak, a deep fall and a bottom inside a year, only about three months early and roughly $18,500 above the $40,000 target. "40K is the new 12K," one reply in the September thread said, a nod to the crowd that spent 2022 waiting for $12,000 and watched the bottom form without them.
The LeveX Take
"Is the bear market over" is two questions running on two clocks. The first is whether the low is in, and on Reddit's own evidence the answer is probably yes: the bulls say so outright, and most of the doubters who name a price are forecasting a higher low. The second is whether the next few months are safe, and nothing in the thread or the chart says they are. A 30% drop from today would still leave the July low standing.
That gives traders something the thread never quite spelled out: one line that settles the argument. The July low at $58,566 is where the case for "over" stops working, and right now it sits almost exactly 30% below the price, so the cautious test and the bullish test have collapsed into a single number. Above it, the case for "over" stands and any pullback is noise. Below it, the calendar crowd gets its second chance.
Holding both views at once is what Multi-Trade on the BTCUSDT perpetual is built for: separate long and short positions on the same contract, each with its own leverage, margin and stop. A trader who believes the low is in but expects the pullback could keep a low-leverage long with its stop under $58,566, plus a smaller short for the dip the doubters keep predicting, with its own stop above the September high near $86,600. Two cautions apply. Both legs pay trading fees and funding, and a stop 30% away only works at low leverage, because at higher leverage a 30% fall triggers liquidation before the stop is ever reached.
What Would Make It Official
The thread's best joke was also its best analysis: only the price can declare a bear market over, and the notice that would end this argument is a hard drop that holds above $58,566, the higher low the pullback camp is already forecasting. Until then, the levels worth watching are the September high at $86,597, the $90,000 one reply wanted to see before agreeing, and the $126,080 peak, about 50% above the October 14 price. As of October 14, the date one reply circled for a wipeout of leveraged traders, bitcoin was trading near $83,700.
