Most published LDO forecasts cluster between $0.26 and $0.40 for the remainder of 2026, with bullish models reaching toward $0.85 and bearish ones holding near $0.20. The spread widens dramatically past 2027, where credible-looking models land anywhere from $0.08 to $2.60, and that disagreement is the most useful information in the whole exercise. Nobody knows what Lido's governance token is worth, because the protocol only started attaching revenue to it in 2026.
Where LDO Sits Today
LDO trades around $0.33 as of early August 2026, with a market capitalisation near $280 million against roughly 836 million circulating tokens out of a 1 billion maximum. That is a drawdown of roughly 95% from the $7 area the token touched in 2023, during a stretch when Lido's staking share and its token price still moved together.
The disconnect since then has been stark. Lido secures close to 8.7 million ETH and generates real fee revenue, while LDO has traded like a token with no claim on any of it, because for most of its existence that description was accurate. The 5% protocol fee accrued to a DAO treasury; the token conferred votes. CoinMarketCap's LDO page shows the full history, and the shape of it explains why every price model built on 2021-2023 correlations has since broken.
The Three Variables That Set the Price
Buyback execution. In March 2026 the DAO proposed routing staking revenue into automated LDO purchases once ETH clears defined price and revenue thresholds, capped at roughly $10 million per rolling year and deposited into a DAO-controlled liquidity position. CoinDesk reported the proposal alongside the observation that the token was trading at a 70% discount to its two-year median. Ten million dollars of annual bid against a $280 million cap is meaningful support, though it does not by itself re-rate the token.
Staking share and ETH price. Lido's revenue is a function of how much ETH it stakes and what that ETH is worth. Share has slipped from a 2023 peak above 32% to the low twenties as institutional stakers and treasury vehicles entered the market. Every point of share lost is revenue that never reaches the buyback trigger, and since the underlying asset is Ethereum, LDO inherits full beta to ETH on top of its own idiosyncratic risk.
The stVaults bet. Lido V3 went live on mainnet in January 2026 with a target of 1 million ETH routed through customisable institutional vaults. Hitting that number would add a revenue line that has nothing to do with retail staking demand. Missing it leaves Lido defending a shrinking share of a maturing market with a product nobody adopted.
What the Models Actually Say
| Horizon | Bearish range | Base case | Bullish range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Late 2026 | $0.20 to $0.27 | $0.26 to $0.40 | $0.69 to $1.00 |
| 2027 | $0.20 to $0.34 | $0.34 to $0.45 | $0.48 to $0.90 |
| 2028 to 2029 | $0.15 to $0.30 | $0.40 to $0.70 | $1.00 to $1.50 |
| 2030 | $0.08 to $0.13 | $0.50 to $0.90 | $2.60 |
Sources including Changelly's LDO forecast, DigitalCoinPrice and several algorithmic models feed these bands. Treat the table as a map of what the market currently believes rather than a projection. The bearish 2030 figures come from momentum models that extrapolate the existing downtrend; the bullish ones assume the buyback framework matures into a durable revenue share and that Lido holds its staking position. Both are internally consistent and mutually exclusive.
One pattern worth noting: almost no model puts LDO back near its all-time high within the decade. Even the optimistic scenarios treat $2 to $3 as the ceiling, which reflects a broad repricing of governance tokens across the market rather than anything specific to Lido.
The Case Against LDO
Three risks sit outside the price models entirely.
The legal one is the sharpest. A California federal court held in Samuels v. Lido DAO that the DAO can be treated as a general partnership under state law, which exposes active governance participants to liability for the partnership's obligations. Summary judgment briefing runs into late 2026 with a hearing scheduled for November. An adverse final ruling would not stop the protocol from staking ETH, and it would change who is willing to hold a token whose primary utility is participating in governance.
The second is structural. Dual governance, activated in July 2025, gives stETH holders a veto over LDO holder decisions. That was the right answer to a real accountability problem, and it also means the governance token governs less than it used to. A buyback that depends on DAO votes is a buyback that stETH holders can slow down.
The third is competitive. Restaking protocols and liquid restaking tokens spent two years pulling capital toward higher stated yields, and Lido's base rate of roughly 2.5% APR looks thin next to them. The protocol's answer is to be the settlement layer those products build on, which preserves TVL while conceding the yield narrative.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will LDO reach $1 again?
Several forecast models put LDO between $0.69 and $1.00 in bullish 2026 and 2027 scenarios, which would require roughly a threefold move from the August 2026 price near $0.33. That path depends on the buyback framework executing at scale and Lido stabilising its staking market share. Base-case models do not reach $1 before 2028.
Is LDO a good long-term investment?
LDO is a leveraged position on Ethereum staking volume plus an unresolved bet on whether Lido's DAO converts protocol revenue into token value. The protocol's fundamentals are strong and the token's claim on them is new and partial. Anyone holding it should size the position as what it is: a governance token carrying an unresolved liability question.
Does staking ETH with Lido require holding LDO?
No. Staking ETH through Lido produces stETH and requires no LDO whatsoever. LDO is purely a governance and, since 2026, a partial revenue-linked token. The two assets trade independently and serve different purposes.
What Would Actually Change the LDO Thesis
The variable to watch is not the chart. It is the quarterly revenue figure Lido reports against the buyback threshold, because that single number determines whether the token has a mechanical bid or a theoretical one. Everything else, the share loss, the stVaults adoption curve, the legal calendar, feeds into that one line.
Traders positioning around LDO should expect the token to behave like a high-beta ETH proxy with a wide idiosyncratic tail on both sides. Volatility around governance votes and court dates has been consistently higher than around price levels, which is unusual and worth building into any risk plan.
